An exercise in visual storytelling, translating Mandela’s legacy into pattern and symbolism to connect rugby and national identity.

For this project, graphic design became a tool for visual storytelling rather than decoration.

Created for Nelson Mandela’s centenary, the brief called for a commemorative jersey that could honour his legacy in a way that was culturally grounded, emotionally resonant, and appropriate for the world of elite sport.

Rugby holds a unique place in South African history. 

Nelson Mandela famously used the sport as a unifying force in the post-apartheid era, most notably during the 1995 Rugby World Cup, where rugby became a symbol of reconciliation and shared national identity.

That historical context formed the conceptual foundation of the design.

The surface print was developed as a narrative device. 

Drawing inspiration from the iconic patterned shirts Mandela often wore, the graphic language references bold African prints that became synonymous with his public image. 

These patterns were not quoted literally, but reinterpreted, translating cultural memory into a contemporary visual system suitable for a performance jersey.

The resulting design operates on multiple levels. 

Visually expressive yet disciplined, the print carries symbolism related to heritage, unity, and celebration, while remaining unmistakably athletic.

Rather than functioning as ornament, the pattern communicates story, identity, and respect, turning the jersey into a wearable tribute.

Produced as a limited edition of 527 individually numbered jerseys, the design resonated far beyond its initial release. Despite its scarcity, the jersey became widely embraced by supporters, with unofficial reproductions appearing in large numbers and the design remaining a familiar sight at matches years later.

This project reflects my approach to visual storytelling: using symbolism, cultural context, and narrative as the foundation for design, and allowing graphics to carry meaning beyond aesthetics.

It demonstrates how surface design can become a cultural artefact, connecting sport, history, and collective identity through a single visual gesture.

Outcome & Impact

The Mandela Centenary jersey became one of the most recognisable and emotionally resonant designs worn by South African rugby supporters.

By embedding cultural symbolism and historical narrative into the surface design, the project demonstrated how graphic language can transcend apparel to become a shared symbol of memory, unity, and national pride.
